What does a school librarian do?
My role (Mrs. Springer) in at RMCS has several facets: teaching students, supporting staff, managing the library business, and providing families read at home initiatives and information about library resources.
I see all classrooms once a week to teach lessons on research skills (digital and physical), digital literacy, internet safety, coding, and to promote recreational reading by giving "book talks" about the great books in our library. I support staff by checking in regularly about their curriculum needs, inquiring how I can support their research units, and supporting educational technology initiatives.
Two family reading incentives happen during the year (Dark Night Read Aloud, and Family Reading Night). The library also provides families with information about having their own RMCS library account, and how to access our digital and audio book app, SORA, as well as our library's online subscriptions.
A school library operates as a small business within the school. Managing the business side of the library at RMCS includes gathering information about the trends within our library and interviewing students and staff about how the library can help them reach their goals. This data is then used to research books and reviews, analyze current and potentially new revenue sources, evaluate and select, and finally purchase new books for our library to support RMCS curriculum and student interests. Wearing my business hat I also plan and update the library's physical space and organization (user friendly, easy to self-navigate, and usable and accessible for all ages and abilities), manage web subscriptions and our online library catalog, and keep up to date on the trends and projected needs of our school library.
